Chapter 17

Saffy greeted me at the door when I got home, my arms full of groceries. “I sure wish you could actually help me with these or at least be able to get the door,” I said, trying to juggle everything so I wouldn’t have to make more than one trip to the car.

She purted at me, her nostrils flaring. She smelled something better than her dinner and hadn’t yet figured out what it was. She followed me into the kitchen, still sniffing the air. Usually, she’d have beaten me in here by a mile because groceries meant new food for her.

“Saffy, off the table,” I chided as she leaped up to find the source of the smell. She glared at me as she jumped back down. That look, however, was nothing compared to the one she gave me as I removed the rotisserie chicken from one of the bags and placed it on the counter next to the stove.

“None for you. You’ll spoil your dinner, and I want to eat first for once. How about after you finish your meal.”

I swear she huffed as she spun around and strutted to her food bowl, her tail swishing.

I looked up, half-rolling my eyes. “Okay. Fine. I’ll feed you now.” I was such a pushover. “But you’re still not getting any chicken right now.” I warmed up her canned food that I’d opened last night, and she lay down in front of her bowl to eat.

I put most of the groceries away, removing a few ingredients from my cupboards and putting them on the table or counter as I stocked my shelves. I left out the potatoes, carrots, and green beans to cook as part of dinner.

I set the oven to preheat, rinsed all the veggies, and set the carrots and green beans into their own baking dishes. I poured maple syrup over the carrots and then tossed the green beans into a bit of olive oil before seasoning them with salt and adding slivered almonds on top. I peeled potatoes while I waited for the oven to tell me it was ready, then slid both baking dishes in once it had. Potatoes peeled, I cut them into chunks and set them in a pot of water to boil.

The whole time, Saffy watched me, once she finished eating, of course. She was hoping I caved and gave her chicken early, and I was keeping an eye on her amongst my prep work so she wouldn’t try to pull a fast one. During our first Thanksgiving together, she ran away with a turkey drumstick and hid under my bed with it. I had to coax her out with the one thing she liked more than anything else. Catnip. Once she was no longer near the drumstick, I had to push it out with a broom. Saffy ended up with most of it, anyway. I couldn’t serve it with holes all over it, but at least with my giving the drumstick to her, I didn’t have to worry about her eating the skin or choking on the bone in her human-food frenzy.
